Low Sodium Diet

Bloated or look like you weigh more than you do? You might want to get on a low sodium or low salt diet. In general, many of us eat many processed foods. We eat canned vegetables, boxed dinners, frozen dinners, etc. The more processed a food is, the more sodium it is going to have in it. Cutting back on sodium can be done in numerous ways. One way is by buying fresh items, like carrots from the farmers market instead of from the can aisle. No, it is not as convenient when wanting cooked carrots, but the amount of sodium put into these cans can bloat you all day long. If buying fresh and cooking is not the best option for you, you could always buy the “low-sodium”, or the “no salt added” foods. Campbells has many soups available that are lower in sodium than the original soups. Many canned vegetables also come in no salt added versions. By buying fresh foods, and seasoning them ourselves, we can eat healthier.

Instead of buying box Macaroni and Cheese, we could make our own. There are butters and margarines that are lower in salt. And if butter is a necessity in your Macaroni and Cheese, then the lower salt alternative is a great choice.

Fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables are a good choice for lower sodium items, with no salt added and all natural. However, just buying fresh produce is not the only way to lessen your sodium intake. We also, as well informed people, must learn how to read a nutrition label. We might assume something has a low amount of salt in it, but after taking a moment to read a label, we might be quite surprised.

Another good thing to remember is that if we buy prepared meals, it is hard to know for sure what all is in the food that we are giving our family. However, if we make our own food, we are the ones putting all of the items into the food. So, instead of buying a pan of Lasagna, make it at home. You can lesson your sodium by simply draining and rinsing the meat, by seasoning instead of “salting”. If you must have your salt, you could always go with a healthier alternative. There are low-sodium alternatives to salt, and many will not notice the difference when it is used.
