Low Fat Diet
A low fat diet has some basic guidelines. They are not hard to learn, and most foods can fit within it. First off, a low fat diet does not imply getting rid of all fat within your diet. It is a low fat diet, not a no fat diet. With a few adjustments in your kitchen, you can catch the low fat diet train.
To start, analyze your kitchen. Leave no corner untouched, including the hiding place where the goodies might be. Get all of the fat filled foods out of your house. If you see it, or know that it is there, it will be a lot harder to kick the desire to eat it. If you do not want to waste food, simply give it to a friend, a sibling, or cook it all into something and bring it to work for a potluck catered by you. I am sure your co-workers would enjoy it.
Next, go to the grocery store. You must know how to read a nutritional label. Product labels have different advertisements on the front. Some say “ fat free”, “low-fat”, “low-sodium”, “low sugar”, “sugar free”, etc. As we are on a low fat diet, this does not mean that the only foods we will eat have to be labeled “ fat free”. This is a bit tricky for some people. For example, Hershey’s chocolate syrup states, “fat free” on the label. So this must be a safe food, perhaps it is within the actual fat content. However, it still has sugar, still has a load of calories, and what do you use chocolate syrup with? That is right - ice cream or milk typically. So even though the topping might be fat free, what we want to put it on, is not. Now, that chocolate syrup does not sound that healthy anymore, does it. This is an example of some of the tricky labels out there. And of course chocolate syrup is fat free, the only thing that is fattening about it, is the fat it puts on us. Something does not have to be made with fat to make fat.
A few easy ways to alter our eating is, opting for the fat free versions of cheese, milk, meat, yogurt, etc. Instead of whole milk, we would get the fat free skim milk. Instead of a buying a pound of ground beef at 40 (fat)/60(meat) we would get the ground sirloin. Or better yet, we would get ground turkey white meat, or salmon. I am not saying that we cannot eat cheeseburgers. What I am saying is that through eating better, we will be able to eat hamburgers longer. It would be nice to still be alive when our children have children, their children have children, and we can all have cheeseburgers together. Wouldn’t that be swell? And by eating healthier and in moderation, we are teaching not only ourselves, but our future generations. If we teach our kids how to eat healthy, they will not know any other way of eating. And that is fabulous.

A touch of bacon to food adds flavor
Bringing home the bacon used to be a noble thing. Today, it's considered a health hazard. So what's a bacon lover to do? Read the nutrition labels and use common sense. The good news is that bacon is so loaded with flavor, a little bit goes a long way. Using just a bit to garnish a salad or speckle a meatloaf or burger can feel indulgent without ruining a diet.
